There is a new Wagner Group. Putin sets fire to another region

The Center for Eastern Studies reports that the African Corps replaced the Wagner Group, which was disbanded last year.

New Wagner group in Africa

“The new troops are to be deployed in several Sahel countries, the Central African Republic (CAR) and Libya, and the scope of their operations will be limited by agreements with local authorities. A condition for the smooth operation of Russian military structures is the free use of ports and airports in Sahel countries in Libya and Algeria,” OSW reports. The African force is a mercenary force and is voluntary in nature.

“Although the declared goal of the African force is to provide assistance in the fight against jihadism, the presence of the structure on the continent Primarily to help expand the Kremlin's military, political and economic influence” – Comment Miłosz Bartosiewicz and Piotr Żochowski, OSW experts.

“These forces may be stationed not only in countries where Russian mercenaries have operated so far (Libya, Mali, CAR, Sudan), but also in Niger, where the US military group is still stationed,” OSW experts add.

Revolt of the Wagnerites

In the evening of the same day, Prigozhin announced the retreat and withdrawal of the mercenaries to the field camps “to avoid bloodshed”. It was the result of an agreement between Lukashenko and Prigozhin, which culminated in an agreement with Vladimir Putin. According to these arrangements, some of the fighters of the Wagner group were to go to Belarus.

On August 23, Dmitry Utkin, including Prigozhin and other representatives of the Wagnerite leadership, died in a plane crash in the Tver region. According to most analysts, their deaths were the Kremlin's revenge for the June uprising and the “March on Moscow”.
