Emergency responders found Matthew Perry “unconscious in a freestanding jacuzzi” when they were called to his home on Saturday.
“A bystander lifted the man’s head above the water and pushed him over the edge, and firefighters then pulled him out of the water when they arrived,” a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson told CNN in a statement on Monday when asked about the incident. Perry was 54 years old.
The circumstances surrounding the actor’s death are being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the LAFD said.
The coroner’s office told CNN on Sunday that an autopsy has been performed, but examiners are awaiting the results of toxicology reports in order to determine Perry’s cause of death. Such reports can take weeks to complete.
No foul play is suspected, a law enforcement source told CNN.
Perry’s parents, John Bennett Perry and Susan Morrison, along with his stepfather, “Dateline” correspondent Keith Morrison, were seen arriving at the actor’s home Saturday night amid police response.
Perry’s family issued a statement to the people The magazine said that they were “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother.”
“Matthew has brought so much joy to the world, as an actor and friend,” the statement read. “You all mean so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”
