Microsoft seems to think we’re getting a PS5 Slim this year

Microsoft believes we’ll get a PS5 Slim model later this year that could be as low as $399.99. The software giant is currently awaiting a ruling on the FTC v. Microsoft As part of the case, Microsoft has filed documents revealing that it believes the PS5 Slim is on the way “later this year.” That’s exactly what Microsoft says:

It is rumored that the console will be sold on its own without a disc drive or in a bundle, which suggests that Sony might consider making a slimmer version of the default PS5. This will allow people to choose with or without a bundled drive, with the option to add a drive later if needed. Currently, you either have to buy the $399 PS5 Digital Edition or the $499 PS5 Edition with a disc drive, but there’s no option to connect an optional disc drive at a later time.

Microsoft’s prediction also has a footnote saying “Sony is also expected to release a portable version of the PlayStation 5 later this year for less than $300,” which isn’t entirely accurate. Sony is planning a portable device later this year that can play PS5 games by streaming them over Wi-Fi from the PS5 console. Microsoft does not cite any third party sources for the timing or pricing of the PS5 Slim in its findings from the fact sheet and conclusion of the law.

If Microsoft’s knowledge of Sony’s planned PlayStation hardware is accurate, this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen secrets leak out FTC v. Microsoft. Last week, a confidential Sony document was not properly redacted, leaking details about the margins Sony shares with publishers, Call of duty revenue and even the cost of developing some of its games.
