The Marvels post-credits scene explained

This post contains spoilers for Wonders.

Wonders It had it all: the return of Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), the big screen debut of Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and the rise of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) into a full-fledged superhero. This brilliant trio would team up, become The Marvels, and save the day from Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), a beautiful Kree alien with a giant hammer and an obsessive thirst to drain the worlds of their natural resources. It had a bunch of cat-like aliens, with a song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.

Given all that, you might think that Marvel might be late with more stuff. But this is Marvel, the studio that can’t help but attach a teaser or some kind of Easter egg to its films. And for long-time superhero fans, this movie has a huge plus.

Spoilers for the marvels below…

The Marvels credits scene teases the introduction of the X-Men once again

In the film’s finale, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau must fix Dar Ben’s mess.

Before he perishes, Dar Ben uses an enormous amount of power to tear apart space and time, creating, as Monica describes, a wormhole into another world. Yes, the MCU is back in the multiverse, but thankfully, it’s pretty simple here: no one needs to know about Kang or the Quantum Realms or any of the complicated stuff out there this year. Quantum obsession. Monica must use her light powers to plug the hole so that every universe can remain intact.

Monica is able to shut them down, but in doing so she crosses into a parallel universe. Captain Marvel tries to save her, but she’s too late. The film ends with Monica breaking up with Carol and Kamala.

In the credits scene, Monica wakes up in what appears to be a medical unit. She looks up and sees a woman who looks like her dead mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch). The woman did not recognize Monica and walked away. Monica slowly begins to realize that although this woman looks like her mother (after all, she is the same actress), she is not the Maria that Monica knows. It may not be Maria at all.

While the two women are trying to understand what is happening, an unseen person enters the room and begins to brief them. The male voice explains that Monica was found floating in space by someone named Binary, and Binary takes Monica to get medical attention. The voice says that Monica looks like she’s from a different world. The camera pans and reveals that the person speaking is Beast aka Hank McCoy aka one of the X-Men. Kelsey Grammer, who played the monster in the Fox series X-Men Movies, he reprises his role.

Beast tells Monica that Charles (as in Charles Xavier, the head of the X-Men) wants to talk to all of them and that the woman she thinks is her mother is Binary, the hero who saved her. The scene cuts to Monica putting everything together as she’s trapped in a parallel timeline and has to figure out how to get home – perhaps with the help of Beast, Binary, Charles, and possibly the X-Men. the X2 Trait From the 2003 movie plays as the scene ends.

What WondersI mean, the post-credits scene

The scene is important for a number of reasons, but the biggest one is that it raises the possibility of the X-Men arriving in the MCU sooner rather than later. Ever since Marvel reacquired the film rights to the X-Men (as part of the Fox acquisition), fans have been waiting to find out when and how the company will bring mutants into the MCU. Before Marvel turned the Avengers into a multibillion-dollar film franchise, the X-Men, along with Spider-Man, were the company’s most popular and profitable heroes.

If the X-Men exist in a parallel universe and Monica Rambeau is there too, it stands to reason that there might be a story in which one or two of our fun mutants accompany her when she returns to the main timeline.

but this is not all.

This is the second time the X-Man has appeared in an MCU movie. In 2022 Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X (Patrick Stewart), appears in a parallel universe. But Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) kills him in a fit of rage. The death of Professor The multiverse of madness. This means that there are at least two parallel universes in the MCU where the X-Men exist and have interacted with the main MCU timeline. And if there are X-Men in these alternate realities, that could indicate that there may be some variation on the X-Men and mutants that already exist in the main MCU timeline.

Another shocking thing that happens in the credits scene is the reference to Binary. In the comics, the duo is the strongest form of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. Carol becomes a cosmic entity and this allows her to travel at the speed of light and control star power. While this comic book incarnation possesses Carol’s human consciousness, their duality is referred to as an independent higher or more powerful being. She is an ally of the X-Men (mainly because the X-Men are in space a lot and because the X-Men are friends with Carol) but prefers to travel and adventure alone in the universe, zooming from one galaxy to another. The X-Men usually stick close to Earth.

Given Binary’s connection to Carol Danvers, it’s possible that the woman Monica believes is her mother (and again, played by the actress herself) is actually this universe’s version of Carol. Or maybe in this universe, Maria Rambeau becomes bi herself, which would explain why she doesn’t know Monica.

What’s clear is that introducing the dual and twisted revenges of all these X-Men characters will spur fan theories and speculation – and that’s something Marvel needs given the lackluster state of the MCU. It’s an exciting crossover with a lot of potential. The problem is that we’ll find out exactly how the X-Men will impact the MCU when Monica and the trio reunite – whenever that may be.
