The game of the day before is based on unpaid workers

The developer of the upcoming survival title The Day Before relies on unpaid workers to finish the game.

The Day Before came out of nowhere and quickly spread due to a short game show. The footage shown so far looks like a mix of Ubisoft’s The Division and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us – a zombie survival game where other players are as dangerous as flesh-eating hordes. it’s the The most popular game on Steamwith over 100,000 added to the pile of must-play games.

open world. Survival. Triple-A production values. The previous day is an ambitious project by a developer that most people have not heard of. All gameplay videos released to date have been scripted.

It’s a video game equivalent to one of the viral videos where someone throws a basketball right back across the court and it lands through the hoop. You know it was organized. You know it’s smoke and mirrors and it probably took 1,000 tries to get the shots. But people still share it as if it were real.

It comes from Fntastic, an unproven developer who made games like Dead by Daylight clone Propnight.

According to the developer’s website, the game was created by an army of unpaid volunteers.

“Fantastic culture is based on the idea of volunteering,” the site says proudly. “This means that every Fntastic member is a volunteer.”

But some animals are more equal than others.

“There are two types of volunteers at Fntastic: full-time and part-time,” the site says. Full-time volunteers work for a salary and their number is limited. “

These unpaid workers do everything from translating to societal moderation. You can also submit your “unique skills to improve our projects or create new special features”.

In a video on the website, the company gives a sales pitch on why they should work for free.

“Whatever you do in life, you do willingly or unwillingly,” the video reads. “If you do it willingly, it becomes heaven. If you do it unintentionally, it becomes hell. Fntastic culture is based on the idea of volunteering. Being a volunteer means that you are willingly participating in the work for a common cause.”

The other person in the video – who was up until this point smiling at the camera – spoke: “The idea of volunteering comes from our own experiences and aspirations. Or, in other words, becoming someone who says ‘yes’ to life. Volunteering means that in every action you take, you bring some His Excellency “.

The previous day is due in 2023. It was recently delayed so the game can be ported to Unreal Engine 5.
