Season 5 of True Detective premieres on HBO with Night Country's Issa Lopez

True Detective has been renewed for a fifth season on HBO. True Detective: Night Country creator Issa Lopez will helm Season 5 under her new overall deal with HBO.

The renewal is not surprising, given the success of Night Country, which saw Jodie Foster and Callie Reese appear in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. According to HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million viewers across platforms. The February 18 season finale was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. This represents a 57% increase from the show's initial viewership in January.

“From concept to release, Night Country was the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” Lopez said. HBO has trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing a new incarnation of True Detective to life with Casey, Francesca, and the entire team is a dream come true. I can't wait to go again.

“Issa Lopez is that rare and unique talent who speaks directly to the creative spirit of HBO,” added Francesca Orci, Executive Vice President of Programming for HBO and Head of Series and Drama at HBO. “She led True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never faltering from her laudable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Combined with Judy and Callie's impeccable performances, this installation of the franchise has been a tremendous success, and we We are so lucky to have her as part of our family.

The season also starred Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Starr-LeBlanc, and John Hawkes. Guest stars include Anna Lambe, Aka Niviana and Joel de Montgrand.

Currently, Foster and Reese are not attached to the fifth installment, as the series changes the main cast with each new season.
