New economic sanctions against Russia. EU countries have reached an agreement

The topic was discussed at the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels on Thursday. According to PAP, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, insisted on handling the matter. As a result, an emergency meeting of ambassadors of states to the EU was convened.

In recent days, there has been an impasse in Brussels over new sanctions against Russia. Some countries, including Poland, called for tighter restrictions. However, some countries preferred to exempt certain sectors and individuals from sanctions.

As POLITICO reported Thursday afternoon, the bone of contention was the export of Russian fertilizers to third countries. Member states from the EU’s eastern region, led by Poland, have pushed for the current ban to remain in place. On the other side of the dispute were six countries from Western Europe. France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands wanted to relax the rules based on risk. Famine disasters In Africa, it depends on Russian fertilizers.

Ahead of Thursday’s summit, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said several countries had proposed removing several Russian oligarchs from the sanctions list, including Vyacheslav Kantor, one of Vladimir Putin’s closest allies in Russia’s economic interests.
