Mets pushes Jacob deGrom’s next start, right-hand star won’t face Yankees in Subway series

New York Mets Right-hander Jacob Degrom will not start on Tuesday against Yankees As was originally expected. Instead, the Mets announced that Taijuan Walker will get the nod on Tuesday while DeGrom will go into a showdown. Colorado Rockies Either Thursday or Friday, according to New York Post.

DeGrom, 34, has started four games since returning from the injured list. His last outing came on Thursday, August 18, which means the Mets will give him about a week of rest between games. In those four starts so far, he has accumulated a 2.31 ERA (172 ERA+) and a 37.00 strike-to-walk ratio. (Lest it reads like a typo, he’s already hit 37 hits and only issued one free pass so far.)

DeGrom had had over a calendar year ahead of his big league debut before returning to the Mets tournament on August 2. Mets manager Buck Showalter stated that he wants to break up DeGrom and Max Scherzer in rotation, Suggesting that there is no greater physical reason to delay the start of DeGrom for a few days.

Walker, 30, has a record of 3.36 ERA (117 ERA+) and a 2.58 walk-to-walk over the course of 21 starts this season. He sparred in the latter starts, allowing him to gain 10 runs in nine rounds over the last three rounds.

Walker was dealing with his injury issues. He has been scratched since his start on Sunday with a bulging disc that required him to leave his last start (last Tuesday) after just two rounds of work. Apparently Walker has made enough progress in his recovery to avoid the casualty list.

That’s good news for the Mets, who lost veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco to Illinois last week due to a tilted strain. The Mets are also still without rookie player Taylor Miguel due to his strained shoulder.
