We knew the 2023 rule changes would lead to some growing insults in MLB – but who could have predicted a night like this?
July 18th was a very historic night for cross-sport offense, as four separate games ended with both teams scoring at least 10 runs, tying an all-time MLB record Most of these games in one day. The other two cases came from this July 4th And July 9, 1894 — a season during which the team averaged 7.38 points per game (compared to 4.60 in 2023), and a season in which it was only MLB’s second using its current mound distance of 60 feet, six inches.
As for the present time, the four games mentioned are as follows:
First, the Mets took down the White Sox, 11-10. New York jumped out to lead 8-2 and 11-4, before the White Sox made things interesting by scoring six runs over the last three innings. The Mets had four home runs in the game, including a pair by Francisco Alvarez.
Next came the most exciting game of the night, if not the entire season: Arizona’s 16-13 defeat of Atlanta. It was the first time both teams scored more than 13 points over the first eight innings of a game since the Yankees and Red Sox in the 2019 London Series, and the only time in the history of a D linebacker for both Arizona and its opponent who scored at least 13 times in a game. Austin Riley of Atlanta and Christian Walker of Arizona each had two pairs of reptiles.
Next was another 11-10 game, this time with the Royals defeating the Tigers in the AL Central showdown. Kansas City went 11-6 to enter the top of the ninth, before Detroit completed a thrilling comeback. The Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson hit two homers, while the Royals put up 11 runs without a player going a yard.
And to crown the historic night of the attack was the battle of the Giants and the Reds. Earlier in the day, the Giants secured a 4-2 victory after restarting a game that had started on Monday, but the nightshirt had the exact opposite theme, with both teams dominating early and often. Wilmer Flores hit two home runs for San Francisco, which came back in a thrilling 11-10 victory.
Outside of these four games—none of which required extra innings—the Dodgers, Guardians, Cubs, and Twins also all scored at least 10 runs batted in, meaning an astonishing 12 teams finished the day with run totals in double digits. This set the MLB record in the modern era (since 1900), via the Elias Sports Bureau, though the all-time mark is 13 teams doing so on July 4, 1894.
