Final Fantasy 16 sold 3 million copies during its launch week

Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy 16 sold more than 3 million copies during its first week on sale.

Square Enix said the achievement consisted of physical and digital sales on PlayStation 5. Physical sales of the game in The UK was reported to be 74% lower than its predecessor, Final Fantasy 15. However, Final Fantasy 16 was still the best seller during its launch week.

Bear in mind the strong sales figures with the caveat that Final Fantasy 16 is only available on PS5. Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold 3.5 million copies in three days when it launched as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in April 2020, but that was to a much larger console install base than the PS5 currently enjoys. Final Fantasy 15 sold 5 million units on its first day, but the game launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2016. Final Fantasy 15 remains the fastest-selling game in the series’ history.

It’s possible Square Enix is working on a PC version of Final Fantasy 16, but producer Naoki Yoshida has said it won’t be released anytime soon.

In IGN’s Final Fantasy 16 review, we said, “Final Fantasy 16 is fast-paced, responsive, and combat-heavy, and it’s definitely a departure from what fans might expect from a Final Fantasy game, but its story, excellent characters, and world-building are right up there with the best that the series has to offer, and it should.” The innovative Active Time Lore sets a new standard for how long, story-driven games can keep players invested in its world.”
