Dolphins-Chiefs will be the latest Ice Bowl, with a -5 leadoff

The infamous Ice Bowl game between the Cowboys and Packers was played at -13 degrees below zero. Other games since have come close. Tonight's Dolphins-Chiefs game becomes the latest.

The current forecast is for the temperature to be -5 when the game starts. It is expected to drop to -8 by the time the game ends. With wind gusts approaching 30 mph, the National Weather Service issued a warning: “Avoid outdoor activities if possible. When outside, be sure to wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves.”

Exposed skin can get frostbite in as little as 10 minutes, the NWS adds.

Via KMBC.comThe coldest game in NFL history was the Ice Bowl. Next up was the January 1982 AFC Championship Game between the Chargers and Bengals, with a kickoff temperature of -9 (the wind chill was 59 below). Third on the list is the January 2016 Seahawks-Vikings Wild Card game that was played outdoors in Minnesota during construction of the team's current stadium. It was less than six o'clock that day. Fourth, the January 2008 NFC Championship between the Giants and Packers. The temperature was below four.

The Dolphins-Chiefs have a chance to replace Brett Favre's final game as a Packer to take fourth place on the list. Which highlights the consequences of the Dolphins' loss last Sunday night — and missing out on the opportunity to play at least two, if not three, postseason games in Miami.
