Dan Campbell’s player-managed workouts were as weird and wonderful as they sounded

The latest episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” gave us a look at Detroit LionsPlayers only training earlier this month, and it was as strange to see it as it seemed at first.

Early on episode four of the show Tuesday night, Lions coach Dan Campbell was talking to his team in the boardroom when he paused the training schedule for the day.

The twist was that he would be the only coach on the field – but he wouldn’t say anything. instead of In fact he exercises himself This time, or Gives his team a wild definition From “The Audacity,” Campbell was only going to watch.

He told his team, “You run the exercises.” “Coaches, they work in Pittsburgh. They won’t be there. So I’ll be the only one, and I don’t coach… I don’t say a word.”

In fact, seeing an NFL team run itself this way was, well, very unusual to say the least.

Now, it wasn’t completely free for everyone. The plays and rehearsals were still written, but it was up to the players to actually play them.

They seem to like it, too.

“I think it would be great to do that. Because frankly, on match day, we are there, we have to communicate, we have to be responsible to each other,” Tell MLive after practice. “So it was good, it was unique.

“I mean, I’ve never done that before. But it was such a good job.”

He’s unlikely to use this strategy as the season goes on, but it’s safe to assume that Campbell will continue player-led training during bootcamp considering how successful this first experience is.
