There have been conflicting reports before. The Russians (note: for the second time in recent months) announced the capture of Pakmut. The Ukrainian military denied the reports, insisting fighting was still ongoing. Ukraine’s president told reporters that “Bakhmut is only in our hearts,” sparking speculation. However, the Ukrainian leader’s spokesman explained that he did not mean that the Russians had taken control of the city..

Zelensky downplays speculation

Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated this point at a press conference on Sunday during the G7 summit.

– We will not let people die, for us people are a treasure, this is the most important thing we have – he emphasized. He also said that he could not disclose the details of the Ukrainian army’s tactical plan. “A little more, we will win,” said the Ukrainian president. He noted that the Ukrainian army “performs very important tasks, is in Pakmut and “there cannot be two or three interpretations on this matter”.

Pakmut in the “half-encirclement” of the Ukrainian army

Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malar had earlier said in a telegram that Russian troops had failed to encircle Bagmut and had lost control of part of the mountains surrounding the city. “Our troops have taken the city in a semi-circle, which gives us an opportunity to destroy the enemy. Therefore, the enemy must defend himself in the part of the city under his control,” wrote Hanna Malar.

The battle for this strategic city was one of the bloodiest episodes of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
