Brett Fitch: We have one sign that I expect will probably be used to help us

The Chiefs have a pair of top defensive players set to become unrestricted free agents next month in defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed.

During Tuesday's press conference at the scouting complex, general manager Brett Veach admitted that signing both contracts at the same time represented “pressure.” But the Chiefs are working to bring back both players.

“You want to be able to tag all the people and pay them,” Fitch said. “It's difficult because the more you win, I mean you have to pay the players more. Obviously when you have that much success, you're paying a lot of money to a lot of players. Then it's just as difficult because you're late in drafting. So, There are challenges. We will get through them and we will always do our best.

“We definitely want to do what we can to try to keep those two players. And that's going to be our goal and our intent. Hopefully we'll be able to figure something out. But every free agency is unique and different and crazy. We have one sign. I expect maybe to use it to help us. But I think our goal is Finishing off both players and then working on the rest of our roster.

Fitch indicated that he will meet with agents this week to start things with both players. The general manager added that Jones is “at the top of the list.”

“I love Chris and I tried hard to get something done, but we didn't,” Fitch said. “But when we met right after the Detroit game, we had a great conversation. And you know, I think both sides want that [Jones] Until you are here. So we will get to work. And this is definitely a guy we want to get back, we love, and we want to see him finish his career in Kansas City.
