LIVE UPDATES: Hurricane Beryl heads toward Jamaica after devastating Grenada

At least three people have died after Hurricane Beryl hit the islands of Carriacou, Petite Martinique, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said.

Two deaths have been reported in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Grenada Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell said at a news conference on Tuesday, citing Tevin Andrews, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

At least one person has died after Hurricane Beryl hit the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said Monday evening.

Hurricane consequences: Mitchell said the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique were the hardest hit in Grenada when the eye of the hurricane passed through. The prime minister said the situation in Grenada was grim as power was still out on Monday.

Mitchell said there was near-total destruction of homes, buildings and gas stations in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and there was “the potential for widespread destruction.”

The Prime Minister said that movement in Carriacou and Petite Martinique is very restricted and roads are impassable due to large amounts of debris in the streets.

Mitchell explained that because the fuel stations were destroyed, heavy equipment operators were unable to get fuel to move around the island and clear debris and roads.

The prime minister added that the country’s coast guard could not go to the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique due to a marine alert in Grenada.

Mitchell said a private plane would transport the Grenada Police Commissioner, members of the Grenada National Disaster Management Agency and a technical assistance team to Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The prime minister has also requested helicopters from the region.
