A 10-member gang arrested by the Rajangana police had committed a spate of murders, robberies and abductions in the Thambuttegama, Rajangana and Talawa areas during the last few months. It was led by and STF deserter.
Police have recovered two three wheelers, three motor cycles, six gold necklaces and five mobile phones.
Investigations have revealed that some members of the gang had, while attempting to rob a gold chain from a young girl at Tekkawatte in Tambuttegama recently, killed a person who had tried to defend the victim.
The gang was also responsible for stealing a gun from a lawyer’s residence and robbing 27 houses and shops in Tambuttegama.
Investigations have also revealed that the gang was responsible for robbing jewellery, cash and other valuables in the Vavuniya-Colombo night mail at the Talawa, Tambuttegama and Senaratgama railway stations.
The gang has spent money on gambling and narcotics, according to the police.
A special team headed by OIC Rajangana IP Kapila Dissanayake is conducting further investigations, under the directions of DIGs Jayantha Gamage, Kithsiri Dayananda, SSP Mervyn Karunaratne and ASP N. A. Jayashantha.
