Herath believes Sri Lanka can save match

Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, who picked up his fourth five wicket haul and the first away from home believes despite the assistance the spin bowlers are getting here at Green Park in the second Test between Sri Lanka and India, the tourists will be able to hold on for a draw after India piled up a mammoth 642 in their first innings.

Sri Lanka require to make 443 runs to avoid follow on and Herath was confident that his side’s strong batting line up that posted a massive

total of 760 runs in the first innings of the first Test will be up for the challenge.

"The track offers some turn, but I don’t think it will be difficult to bat on. Although there’s some turn, it’s slow turn. I believe the batsman will adapt and get us a good total and we can draw the Test Match," the 31-year-old told reporters Having failed to pick up any wickets on the first day, Herath was also thrilled to end up with a five wicket haul on day two. "When I started this series, personally I wanted to get a five wicket haul in India. That was one of my targets and I am glad that I have achieved that."

Herath accounted for the last five of the six Indian wickets as the tourists lost their last six batsmen for just 29 runs. "I got three wickets from the delivery which goes the other way. There was some assistance from the track, but throughout the game there wasn’t much help for the bowlers. I tried to mix up my deliveries. On a track where it’s easy to bat it’s important to mix up your deliveries," he added.

He also said that a few tips from fellow left-arm-spinner and New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori turned out to be handy. "I spoke to Daniel when he was in Sri Lanka. He’s actually one of my favourite bowlers. There’s nothing special that I asked him, but I was interested on what kind of concentration he had," Herath said.

Herath added that when Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir went after him on day one he didn’t lose hope. "I believe in myself 100 percent in whatever I do. Whether you bowl, bat or field, you have to give 100 percent all the time and I back myself."
